Schools can now suspend or expel students for bullying that occurs off campus

AB256 of  2013 amended Ed. Code Section 48900 to allow schools to suspend students for certain electronic acts of bullying which occur “on or off” school grounds.  Previously, the Code only allowed for suspension due to bullying which occurred during school or school sponsored events.  AB256 addresses the “electronic” form of bullying which can be done by telephone, computer and the like at any time of the day from anywhere in the world.

Districts should review and update their Board Policies to include the “electronic” form of bullying off campus.
